On-the-job training
  • Ophthalmic Technician
    • Determine basic anatomy of the eye. Ability to give a brief summary of each part of anatomy and its use. Ability to use a Slit Lamp.
    • Ability to perform basic visual acuity testing.
    • Ability to determine chief complaint and the patient's ocular, medical, social. and family history.
    • Ability to perform a Pupil examination including size, APD, and understand basic pupil disorders.
    • Understand and perform a motility exam; including brief cover test, hirschberg test, ductions and versions testing, and basic ocular motility disorders. Perform basic color testing
    • Perform basic confrontation test and understand disorders of the visual field.
    • Use a slit lamp and tono pen to determine Ocular pressure.
    • Perform a brief refraction using a phoropter. Measure glasses with a lensometer. Ability to determine lens type.
    • Use a slit lamp to examine external anatomy and understand basic adnexa disorders. Ability to measure exopthalmology, and ptosis.
    • Understand basic pharmacology of the eye.
    • Ability to recognize contact lens types, dispensing, care and maintenance.
    • Perform basic ocular testing ; including ocular biometry, OCT, Visual field, Topography, Autorefraction,
    • Ability to make appointments, change appointments, answer basic questions from patients, ability to determine an ocular emergency, insurance information and billing techniques.
  • Recommend types of assistive devices
    • Assist clients in selecting frames according to style and color, and ensure that frames are coordinated with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions.
    • Recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit client needs.
  • Measure the physical or physiological attributes of patients.
    • Measure client's bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices.
  • Merchandise healthcare products or services.
    • Sell goods such as contact lenses, spectacles, sunglasses, and goods related to eyes, in general.
    • Arrange and maintain displays of optical merchandise.
  • Fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, or other vision aids.
    • Assist clients in selecting frames according to style and color, and ensure that frames are coordinated with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions.
    • Heat, shape, or bend plastic or metal frames to adjust eyeglasses to fit clients, using pliers and hands.
  • Instruct patients in the use of assistive equipment.
    • Instruct clients in how to wear and care for eyeglasses.
    • Show customers how to insert, remove, and care for their contact lenses.
  • Operate diagnostic or therapeutic medical instruments or equipment.
    • Determine clients current lens prescriptions, when necessary, using lensometers or lens analyzers and clients eyeglasses
    • Perform eye exam work-ups.
  • Record patients medical histories
    • Maintain records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments.
  • Perform clerical work in medical settings.
    • Perform administrative duties, such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, and performing simple bookkeeping
    • Obtain a customer's previous record, or verify a prescription with the examining optometrist or ophthalmologist.
    • Provide customer service including answering questions, scheduling and other miscellaneous duties.
  • Gather medical information from patient histories.
