On-the-job training
  • Work Process 1
    • Apprentice will demonstrate how to use the Smith System of Defensive Driving
    • Apprentice will work with trainee and make them familiar with the qualcomm unit
    • Apprentice will work on proper scanning pattern. (Scanning surrounding near and far and to each side and behind using mirrors)
    • Apprentice will do some trip planning
    • Begin working on backing skills. The 45 degree and 90 degrees are most common.
    • Task analysis-shifting
    • Coupling/uncoupling tractor/trailer
    • Apprentice will turn in a driver skills evaluation
    • Apprentice will also perform safety inspection procedure to be graded by trainer
  • Work Process 2
    • Work on development of scanning pattern
    • Scanning all around vehicle every 5 to 8 seconds
    • Learn the 5 keys of the Smith System
    • Continue working on backing skills
    • Go over company policy and guidelines about pickup and deliveries
    • Go over washout procedures for reefer trailers
    • Take a few minutes to review your bills of lading. Always double check your bills against your qualcomm trip info
    • Take time to open up permit book and understand what is in it and where to find it. Also, locate the places where the trailer registration is located on different model trailers
    • Apprentice will perform safety inspection procedure to be graded by trainer
  • Work Process 3
    • Can complete all required log entries unassisted
    • Can demonstrate an acceptable understanding of the 11, 14, and 70 hours of service
    • Can complete all required info needed to complete all paperwork (bill of lading, receipts, etc.)
    • Can communicate and perform all essential functions of qualcomm
    • Can demonstrate ability to plan trips, including route selection, scaling out truck and trailer, fuel stops and arrival times
    • Can acceptably perform double clutch shifting has exposure to and safety performs night driving
    • Can demonstrate the ability to safety to the vehicle on limited access highways
    • Has demonstrated a cooperative attitude, willingness to learn and the aptitude to achieve the desired objectives
    • Apprentices will perform safety inspection procedure to be graded by trainer
  • Work Process 4
    • Apprentice can operate truck unassisted and pass a thorough vehicle safety inspection
    • Can perform unassisted and demonstrate all skills knowledge learned in training to this point
    • Has safety operated the vehicle on both urban and rural multiple lane highways
    • Has demonstrated ability to maintain control of the vehicle on all grades
    • Is able to drive approximately 75% of all driving time
    • Has exposure to and safely performed night driving
    • Has participated in loading/unloading cargo
    • Has exposure to and safely performs city driving
    • All task analysis
    • Apprentice will turn in Driver Skills Evaluation
  • Work Process 5
    • Approximately 300 hours behind the wheel accrued through Stage 3
    • Lane change
    • Shifting
    • Backing
    • Right Turn
    • Left Turn
    • Lane positioning
    • Coupling/uncoupling training
    • Smith System Evaluation
    • Apprentice will return to terminal to take upgrade written exam and upgrade road test
